De première van Rachmaninovs Eerste Symfonie in 1897 liep uit op een fiasco. Het zou te wijten zijn geweest aan dirigent Aleksandr Glazoenov , die naar verluidt dronken was. Het debacle was een dreun voor Rachmaninovs zelfvertrouwen. Pas na enige jaren herstelde hij, dankzij hypnotherapie. Het Tweede Pianoconcert liet horen dat zijn muziek voller en breder werd. Die breed golvende melodieën horen we ook in de Tweede Symfonie (1906-07). En dan met name het Adagio, met prachtige solo voor klarinet....
